I'd never heard of Fun-A-Day LA before 2020 since I live in Long Beach and I wasn’t as familiar with what was going on in LA. Lucky for me, Amy and Richard decided to move to Long Beach and posted a call for entries on the Art Clout Facebook page. Art Clout is a Long Beach visual arts group founded by me and a couple of other local artists to help foster community and opportunities for artists, and Fun-A-Day really fit that bill. A few other artist friends of mine decided to participate and it ended up being a really great event. I’m so glad to have met Amy, Richard, Barb, and other artists who’ve already been part of the Fun-A-Day family.
Since I’d done projects like Inktober where you work on something every day for a month, the idea of a Fun-A-Day project wasn’t that daunting. I, of course, had to work cats into this project, as I am a “crazy” cat lady and love all things cats. Drawing a cat a day seemed like the perfect thing to do, and I set out a large sheet of watercolor paper on to which I drew cats from all walks of acquaintance: from my own cats to friends’ cats to celebrity cats to rescue cats. The result was a happy wallpaper pattern-like collection of cat drawings. It was such a fun and positive experience for me that of course I was excited about participating again, even if it probably meant the format would have to go virtual—as so many others things have done—due to the pandemic. I’d also signed up to be a volunteer this year, as this is a project that I really believe in and want to do all I can to help make it a success again. View more of Stephanie's cats (and other works) online at: www.steph-han.com Watch Stephanie on Amy's Art Cabaret being interviewed for her own art and again for the podcast she participates in called Mona Lisa Has No Eyebrows. Catch new art by Stephanie and other FADLA artists for 2021. Join in too, being an artist is not required. Registration and being in the show are both free to do and open to all. Registration starts in December. Update - 2020 took us all for a turn where everyone in the world was stuck at home and all the other Fun A Day shows were cancelled. As we reflect back and realize that being an early bird was not planned, but ended up being great for many reasons - not the least being we got to see all the art, artists, family and friends in person! We hope to be able to do that again. Yet are planning a virtual show for 2021. Nothing is gonna stop the fun, but we will make the compromise of seeing you all online, and maybe some of you in person. The giant upside is now our show is available for everyone in the entire world to join in the show! Here's to 2021 and all our future connections and creations! Spread the word. Registration / call goes out in December 2020.
For now reflect back and enjoy 2020 in images! This will be my fourth year joining in on Fun a Day LA, and every project I’ve done has been a real joy. It’s a time to think, what have I always wanted to get around to? and an excuse to DO THAT THING, NOW. It’s also a time to notice all the best clutter -- the interesting fabrics, the bags of yarn, the inks and paints and cardboard — they’re patiently waiting to be used, taking up space. It’s a new year, let them finally become something!
We asked Diane Cyr, who has been in every single Fun-A-Day-LA show to tell us a little bit about her work and why she participates.
'I’ve always been one of those “someday” artists, as in: “Someday, I’ll work on that project, but right now I have all these things I really ‘should’ be doing.” Working on my own projects always felt indulgent and selfish. I rarely devoted time to my own creativity—to doing something just because it was fun! That’s why I was excited to hear about Fun-a-Day. For a whole month, I got to work on a project JUST for fun, with the satisfaction of knowing that it would actually be displayed and celebrated. I loved that there was no judgment or criteria—AND I loved that there was a deadline! It’s the only opportunity I have all year to tell myself every day, “Go ahead and work on that. In fact, make sure you work on that because you have to show it at the end of the month.” What could be better for a procrastinating, guilt-prone artist than permission to do what you want for a whole month! I love FADLA, and I’m very proud of the pieces I’ve made. If not for FADLA, they’d still all be living in my head, filed under “someday.”' Diane Cyr Diane will be in the FADLA Now in Long Beach 2020 show. She is unable to make the show herself but her work 'Bag Crowd' will be in this year's show! So stop by and see what a "someday" artist makes when given a deadline. Better yet join in the fun. Registrations being accepted into January. Either fill out the form, email us or message us via social media. ![]() Art Clout is about "Long Beach visual artists who wanted to find a way to better connect with their peers and to open up more opportunities for everyone.
